Gaylea Langlitz has considered herself an artist since the age of eight. Her artistic journey began one evening when her parents went out on a date and left her and her younger siblings with a babysitter. The young woman happened to bring along a sketchpad and a set of drawing pencils. Curious, Gaylea asked if she would teach her how to draw. The babysitter encouraged her to choose a few reference images, and Gaylea selected illustrations of a lion cub and Peter Pan from two children’s books. With gentle guidance, she successfully completed both drawings.
When her parents returned home that evening, they looked at the drawings with amazement and proudly declared, “We have an artist in the family.” Those simple words marked the beginning of a lifelong passion for creating art.
Recognizing her interest and talent, Gaylea’s mother enrolled her in weekly private art lessons with a local artist. For the next two years, she attended classes every Saturday, where she learned the fundamentals of oil painting and created several original works. Her paintings were later exhibited in a local community art show at a neighborhood bank, marking her first public exhibition.
Throughout high school, art became the center of Gaylea’s education. She majored in art during three separate years, completing nine advanced art courses while exploring a wide range of artistic disciplines. Her studies included drawing, painting, ceramics, jewelry making, silversmithing, stained glass, black-and-white photography, filmmaking, and design. She spent countless hours in the art room, continually experimenting with new materials, techniques, and creative processes.
After high school, Gaylea continued pursuing creative work professionally. She worked in an auto body shop specializing in custom airbrushing and pinstriping, where precision and creativity transformed ordinary vehicles into personalized works of art. She later worked in a commercial sign shop, hand-painting large-scale signs from scaffolding while developing a deep appreciation for typography. To her, letterforms possess their own artistic beauty, blending craftsmanship with communication.
Although she dreamed of attending college immediately after high school to study fine art, financial circumstances made that impossible. At the time, art education opportunities were largely limited to architecture or traditional graphic arts using printing blocks and ink. Unable to afford college, Gaylea built a successful career in the hospitality industry, working as a server, bartender, and restaurant manager. Throughout those years, she never stopped creating. Her sketchbooks, paintings, and creative projects remained a constant part of her life.
In 1994, Gaylea was finally able to pursue formal higher education. She was accepted into Russell Sage Junior College in Albany, New York, where she earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Graphic Design. Her education strengthened her artistic foundation through advanced coursework in drawing, painting, three-dimensional design, black-and-white photography, typography, digital art, and graphic design. There she learned to combine traditional artistic principles with emerging digital technologies, broadening both her technical abilities and creative vision.
Following her associate degree, Gaylea continued her education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications, a Master of Arts in Visual Communications, and a Master of Science in Instructional Design and Technology. Each degree expanded her understanding of visual storytelling, communication, design, and the psychology of learning—knowledge that continues to influence both her fine art and digital creations.
For more than sixteen years, Gaylea has worked as an Instructional Designer and Technologist, combining creativity, technology, education, and visual communication. Alongside her professional career, she has continued creating fine art, stained glass, handcrafted jewelry, and digital artwork, further developing her artistic voice across both traditional and contemporary media.
Today, Gaylea’s work reflects a lifetime of artistic exploration. Her experiences across traditional fine arts, commercial design, typography, photography, airbrushing, and digital media have shaped an artistic style rooted in craftsmanship, storytelling, and continual learning.
Driven by a lifelong fascination with symbolism, reflection, and the emotional power of visual storytelling, Gaylea creates artwork that encourages viewers to pause, look more deeply, and discover meaning beyond the surface.
